I’m excited to share my latest piece, just published in High Times magazine:

“When Beer Beats Weed: Germany’s Cannabis Reform Backlash”

Germany’s partial cannabis legalization, the Cannabis-Gesetz (CanG) of April 2024, is working. Black market share is shrinking, patient access has exploded, youth consumption continues its downward trend, and the first official government assessment (EKOCAN, October 2025) confirms it. Yet Germany’s new conservative-led government wants to roll it all back.

In this article, I explore the political hypocrisy behind the backlash, from the CDU’s structural ties to the alcohol lobby to a deeper cultural fear, eloquently articulated by Swiss scholar Rudolf Gelpke, of the introspective consciousness cannabis promotes. I also draw a historical parallel to U.S. prohibitionist propaganda and ask what Germany’s new era of military rearmament means for cannabis policy.
